John Layzell
Having worked in 2D – mostly drawing – for most of my life I have always wanted to translate that to 3D, and so I am glad now to have got into sculpture. I work in a number of different media but gravitate mostly to stone, wood or thermalite. My work tends to be a process of revealing an image from a medium by taking away all that is not required, rather than building up an image out of my own imagination. Thus if carving an elephant, my aim is to take away everything that is not elephant. Inspiration comes from the world around me or from what I have been reading, and is then expressed as the materials used gradually show the effect of that inspiration. My work is sometimes quite abstract, sometimes figurative, depending on where inspiration leads.
