Founding members of Wessex Sculptors with John Souter shortly after moving into the Black Barn, September 2003
About Us
Wessex Sculptors was formed following the closure of a sculpture course at the Tower Arts Centre, Winchester in 2001. The course was taught by sculptor John Souter and some of his pupils decided to find an alternative venue for themselves, taking John with them so that they could continue to make sculptures with his guidance and support. It was May 2003 before our present accommodation was found, an ideal barn outbuilding to rent at Brockwood Park Farm. As an empty shell, the group worked hard to kit it out as a working studio and were able to move in by September 2003, achieving charitable status 2 months later.

We’ve been on many inspiring trips, including the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Barbara Hepworth Museum, Hannah Peschar Gardens, Roche Court and many well known artists’ studios to name a few.
The highlight of our social calendar is a pot luck lunch in the studio in January, a lovely way for us all to get together and enjoy a glass of mulled wine and share some delicious food.
If you are interested in joining us, you can learn more about what this entails on our MEMBERSHIP page.
Member numbers are kept between 30 and 34, each paying a monthly fee which provides access to the studio and use of some materials at any time. Work is lead by members with experienced sculptor John Souter available for 2 hours on Monday and Thursday mornings during term time to give help and advice when required. John also gives tutorials for members on requested methods and materials. These have included the use of resin, how to construct an armature and how to create different patinas and textured finishes. John has also led group projects which have been explored alongside our individual work.
