Shirley Dodd

We are very sad to announce the passing of Shirley in July (2024).  It is a great loss to Wessex Sculptors and to all who knew her.  Shirley was a founding member of our organisation and instrumental in not only forming Wessex Sculptors and setting it up as a charity but also in finding our current premises and helping to set it up as the studio it is today.

Shirley had studied with a number of well-recognised sculptors, including Sally Hersh, Sukey Erland and John Souter. She worked successfully in clay but carving in stone, in particular the tactile qualities of soapstone, had a particular appeal for her.

Shirley observed indigenous sculpture in Asia and Latin America as well as those from the antique and more contemporary European traditions. Her work reflected these wide sources of inspiration.

She exhibited and sold in Hampshire and Sussex.
