This workshop was run on the 25th October, from 10am to 4pm.  Always a popular course, it expored the capabilities of carving into thermalite blocks with hand tools (hand saws, chisels, rasps and files).  An ideal introduction to carving, thermalite blocks can be a cheap, quick and effective alternative to clay and plaster casting, when making maquettes for simplified or abstract sculpture.  Given their availability from any large hardware store, and no specialist tools required to work them, thermalite blocks can also be a great material to use simply as an introduction to carving and sculpture.

Our tutor for this workshop saw the welcome return of Will Davies, a sculptor of 20 years of experience who has worked as Head Stonemason at Winchester Cathedral.   All attendees thoroughly enjoyed the day and the weather was kind enough to allow working outside.  You can see how successful their lovely carvings were!
