In March 2016, Alison Crowther and Phillip Jackson, both renowned sculptors with international reputations, kindly opened their studios for us to visit. They both spent time with us, showing us their recent works and talking to us about their working practices and methods. Alison Crowther is a sculptor and furniture maker working with British oak, often producing very large scale pieces into which she carves delicate and complex patterns as a response to the natural forms and textures of the wood. Phillip Jackson’s work tends to be figurative, meticulously and expertly produced and presenting a sense of dramatic narrative. Two very different artists but equally fascinating and inspiring.
